The Foo Fighters are not headlining this year's Maryland Deathfest, but they could be! The arena-filling alt-rock heroes fronted by Dave Grohl have released a new song called "March of the Insane" that's an utterly ripping, balls-to-the-wall death-thrash banger. Yes, those Foo Fighters. To clarify, the band aren't pivoting to Vader-style head-bangery for their full-time gig. The song was specifically recorded for their upcoming horror-comedy, Studio 666, which follows the Foos during their stay at a haunted recording studio in which hilarity and horror ensues.
In the movie, "March of the Insane" is a song written by a fictional metal band called Dream Widow who haunt the house, and whoever records their unfinished song from many years earlier releases their devilish spirits into our mortal plane.
"The premise of the movie is that we move into this house, I have writer's block, I'm totally uninspired, I can't come up with anything," Grohl explained during a recent interview with Howard Stern, as transcribed by Ultimate Classic Rock. "And I wind up finding this creepy basement. And I go into the basement, I find this tape by a band from 25 years ago that recorded there. And there's this song that, if recorded and completed, the fucking demon in the house is unleashed, and then, whatever, all hell breaks loose."
So the song serves a specific function within the movie, but it's still a total fucking heater in its own right that could be mistaken for any kick-ass death-thrash group from the last 30 years. Listen above via YouTube.
