Full of Hell have never been your daddy's average grindcore band. The Maryland unit, who've somehow been around for 12(!) years now, have always challenged their roots in the hardcore scene by collaborating with noise stalwarts like Merzbow, the Body and HEALTH — while simultaneously getting heavier and more violent-sounding on each subsequent solo release.
After venturing further into death-metal brutality on 2017's Trumpeting Ecstasy, the band incorporated more noise elements onto their 2019 behemoth, Weeping Choir, and their new LP, Garden of Burning Apparitions, aims to push every element even further. "Industrial Messiah Complex" is its lead single, and it's one of the most intense things the band's ever released.
Over pummeling blast beats and earth-rattling low-end, the band places wiry noise-rock licks, stuttery vocal effects and blackened shrieks from frontman Dylan Walker. There's one point in the middle that sounds like a grindcore song being played through a helicopter rotor. That doesn't even sound like something that's technologically possible, but Full of Hell make it happen on this ripper.
"'Industrial Messiah Complex' examines the commodification and weaponization of faith and spirituality," Walker commented. "This misdirection is a ploy for control and power. Whether through some profit obsessed mega-church or via militaristic action, humanity is raked over the coals and bled out until there's nothing left but cinders and dust."
