At the Gates have unveiled another foreboding rager from their upcoming album, The Nightmare of Being. The Gothenburg melodic death metal pioneers injected elements of prog into the record's first single, "Spectre of Extinction," but this one dials back the technicality and revs up the haunting atmospheres.

After their initial run of albums throughout the Nineties, At the Gates returned with two records in the 2010s that demonstrated an impressive faithfulness to their signature — and highly influential — sound. Understandably, the band  — vocalist Tomas Lindberg Redant, guitarists Martin Larsson and Jonas Stålhammar, bassist Jonas Björler and drummer Adrian Erlandsson — have decided to adjust that time-tested formula on this new record, and "The Paradox" is another promising switch-up that adds blackened textures and unique leads without foregoing that classic ATG riffage.

"Humanity is the biggest paradox," Lindberg Redant said in a statement. "We as humans always want justification for the big things: death, the meaning of life, etc. Our knowledge of being mortals drives us away from being human, hence the paradox. We invent defense mechanisms to protect us from the thought of death, religion, different –isms, etc."

The frontman also revealed some behind-the-scenes chaos about the song's accompanying music video, which you can watch above via YouTube.

"This was a very fun video to record, as we tried to create most of the 'special effects' in an analog way, and not just to be added in the editing," Lindberg Redant explained. "Hence, we were drenched in tons of crushed coal and soil, which took over a week and a lot of showers to get out of our hair. We really wanted an oppressive, apocalyptic emotion for this video. And [director] Patric Ullaeus, being the master that he is, went all the way to make that happen."

The Nightmare of Being is due out July 2nd via Century Media Records. We have an exclusive "Ultra Clear" vinyl variant available in our shop that's limited to just 300 copies. Grab yours now before they're gone!
