Hear Ghostemane's Gnarly, Intense New Song "D(r)ead" Featuring Travis Barker

Extreme metal–inspired rapper evokes NIN via crushing track and horror-show video

In alternative culture as of late, the lines between metal and hip-hop has been blurring more than ever, as both worlds continue to take pieces from the other. One artist making a point to further that crossover is rapper Ghostemane, who — rocking a sick Darkthrone shirt — has just released a dark new song "D(r)ead" and its Nine Inch Nails–esque music video, directed by Max Beck. The production on the track is as noisy and gnarly as that of any underground metal song, throwing a sense of unexpectedness over the cut. Ghostemane's vocals, meanwhile, oscillate between screaming and extremely low and out of the way, flipping on a verse.

Then enters drummer extraordinaire Travis Barker, who kicks the song into a completely different direction, upping the energy of the track as it goes off in an even more abrasive industrial trajectory. Here, Ghostemane pulls off the closest thing he has to rock singing, showing he'd be a pretty solid frontman if he ever wanted to go to the full band route. We're here for it.
