Hear Gulch's Reverent Cover of Pixies' "Monkey Gone to Heaven"

San Jose hardcore favorites wave goodbye

One of leading lights in the vibrant NorCal hardcore scene, Gulch are in the midst of playing their final shows, which include an appearance at the upcoming Sound and Fury festival. Today (June 21st), the San Jose crew released a largely faithful take on the Pixies classic "Monkey Gone to Heaven," which serves as a heartfelt wave goodbye. The cover was recorded for a split 7-inch with Militarie Gun, which accompanies the sixth volume of the What's the Furthest Place From Here comic book series.

Whereas Gulch's cover of Siousxie and the Banshees' "Sin in My Heart" — on 2020's Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress — flipped the goth-punk anthem into gnarly mosh fodder, the hardcore band plays it much more straight their Pixies take, with guitarist Cole Kakimoto's wife handling Kim Deal's parts. The cover is up now on all major digital streaming platforms. You can check it above via YouTube.
