Hear Jinjer's Head-Spinning New Song "Vortex"

First taste of Ukrainian crushers' new album 'Wallflowers'

Back in May, when we talked to Jinjer frontwoman Tatiana Shmayluk about the sound of the prog-djent juggernaut's highly anticipated new album, she turned to the world of cinema for a description. "I was watching a Spanish horror movie with subtitles and there were subtitles when very scary music was playing in the background," she told us. "It said, 'Uneasy music playing.' And I like that word 'uneasy.' I could apply it to [this album's] sound. It's uneasy."

Today (June 17th), the Ukrainian metal stars finally unleashed the lead single from the album, the aptly titled "Vortex," and it is indeed uneasy. Building ominously from a cleanly sung and played intro, the song erupts in a paroxysm of knotty, Meshuggah-esque pummel. The accompanying music video brings the music to life — almost literally — portraying the band performing the song as a windstorm whips items from the set together to form a Kaiju-like monster outside. Watch and listen above.

"'Vortex' is the first song we recorded and the first single we played live [at Hellfest From Home 2021]," Jinjer commented. "This is a perfectly balanced song in our opinion. A story told through the music and it deserved a video to perfectly match it. The video is a journey, giving the single another layer, another message, as Tatiana sings about the burden of heavy thoughts and how devastating it can be, the video mirrors what the world has sadly become for many of us."

In contrast to "Vortex," Jinjer's forthcoming album is titled much more demurely: Wallflowers, a reference to Shmayluk's introversion. The 11-track LP is due out August 27th via Napalm Records and available now for pre-order. See the cover art and track list below.
