Kenny G may be the king of smooth jazz, but he's not afraid to dabble in some masked avant-garde conceptual heavy metal. The elevator-ruling saxophonist has popped up on a new song, "Merkurius Gilded," by NYC weirdos Imperial Triumphant. How? Why? The connection is his son, Max Gorelick, a New York-based composer who plays in the progressive metal band the Mantle, and also appears on "Merkurius Gilded" alongside his famous father.
The song appears on Imperial Triumphant's upcoming new album, Spirit of Ecstasy, due out on July 22th, and it arrived today (June 10th) accompanied with a lavish, Steve Blanco-directed music video depicting a decadent Eyes Wide Shut-esque party. Watch above. Fun fact: Revolver contributor Kelsey Chapstick did the makeup. Less fun fact: Kenny G doesn't appear in the video.
"What once was a gilded age of industry and exceptional growth only to be stricken with panic that shall leave the common man in the dust, dried up and faded away," Imperial Triumphant commented of the song in a joint statement. "Merkurius looks down upon Forty Second Street mobs releasing their fortunes into the sky of ignorance."
