Hear Lamniformes Channel Melvins, Fugazi, Josh Homme on Moody New Sludge-Doom Song

In musical terms, the word drone signifies a singular tone that is continuously sounded over and over and over ... which is to say the chances of a drone track being totally boring (and borderline unnecessary) are very high. Yet for every rule there is an exception, much like Melvins proved to the world on records like Gluey Porch Treatments and Bullhead or Sleep or even High on Fire with tracks like "Baghdad."

Let's be real though, the latest track by Lamniformes, "I Have Been a Flame," is not really a true drone track in practice, but interestingly enough uses elements of that style fused with post-hardcore-isms — think Fugazi's hypnotic repetition as a driving force and you might have an idea.

Lamniformes — the songwriting project of multi-instrumentalist Ian Cory (Gabby's World, Bellows) — kick off "I Have Been a Flame" with a muscular fuzzy bass line that's not too far removed from the Stoner Witch classic "Night Goat," yet twists and turns within the track, along with a crooning vocal that recalls Josh Homme, give it a character all it's own. To call it stoner/sludge would be accurate yet also reductive, but to call it interesting would be on point.
