Lingua Ignota — the project of classically-trained singer/multi-instrumentalist Kristin Hayter — will return later this year with another batch of devastatingly stark extreme music. Her fourth album, Sinner Get Ready, is set to arrive in August via Sargent House, but today, Hayter is giving us a sample with a song called "Pennsylvania Furnace."
As the track's title alludes to, Sinner Get Ready has a visceral connection with the desolate heart of rural Pennsylvania. The follow-up to her 2019 album, Caligula, was conceived while Hayter was living there, and she made a point to channel the region's barren eeriness by eschewing her typical sonic toolkit for traditional Appalachian instruments.
Whereas much of Hayter's early material was an eclectic fusion of classical music, noise and lung-piercing extreme metal, "Pennsylvania Furnace" doesn't contain any of her pained shrieks or pulsating noise textures. It's a slow-building piano song that gradually grows in intensity thanks to Hayter's mesmerizing voice, which stretches vine-like while the minimal instrumentation climbs up to a riveting climax.
