Hear the Lion's Daughter's Stunning New Black Metal–Meets–Eighties Horror Album

'Future Cult' pairs ominous John Carpenter-style synths with vicious modern metal

On paper, the Lion's Daughter sounds like a stoner's dream: "Hey man, let's like ... put John Carpenter–style horror synths together with some hella brutal metal, bro! It'll be tight AF!" And even if you're not among the 420-friendly population of Revolver, let us assure you: this indeed sounds tight AF.

St. Louis is the home of the Lion's Daughter, the trio in question that indeed mix Seventies/Eighties horror synths with metal in the greatest way possible. Imagine a black-metal-leaning Mastodon with Steve Moore in tow, and you might have the idea. The band's latest effort is the utterly fascinating and well-executed Future Cult, which is positively a metal album through and through.

And though metal is the primary conduit, the synth portions of the record aren't just relegated to intro and outros either — instead the heavily vibe-y synthesizers are seamlessly weaved into the fabric of the compositions. For example, one of the album highlights is "Die Onto Us," which excellently mixes Halloween-esque arpeggios alongside blast-beats. Future Cult is a wildly fun listen, and wholly original in the best of ways.
