Hear Marilyn Manson's Snarling Rendition of Folk Song "God's Gonna Cut You Down"

Grim traditional tune previously recorded by Elvis, Johnny Cash and others

As Marilyn Manson told us earlier this year, he's been recording new music with outlaw country star Shooter Jennings and making an album that he described as "southern" in tone and biographical in theme. Today, October 18th, he's given us a taste of things to come in the form of a dark, brooding cover of American folk song "God's Gonna Cut You Down." The traditional tune, also known as "Run On" and "Run On for a Long Time," serves as a warning to sinners that there's no escaping God's judgment. Elvis Presley recorded it as "Run On," while Johnny Cash can be heard performing it on 2006's posthumously released American V: A Hundred Highways. Now, Manson follows in that lofty lineage, bringing to the song his signature gravelly snarl and singular strain of American gothic.

Manson's rendition arrives paired with a cinematic black & white video directed by Tim Mattia and filmed in Joshua Tree, California. The clips sees the shock-rock icon cavorting in a shadowy hotel room, shotgun in hand, and out in the desert, digging a lonely grave and ultimately burying what appears to be his own dead body. "God's Gonna Cut You Down" is available for pre-order now on limited pressing picture disc featuring one of Manson's original watercolor paintings.
