Memphis May Fire are back to their heavy roots. The Denton, Texas, group fronted by Matty Mullins came up in the era of metalcore bands who split the difference between catchy and crushing, and their previous two albums put the focus on their melodic side. Whatever happened during the pandemic really shook up their approach, though, because this new song "Blood & Water" is a total return to form.
The track is the first new material they've released since their 2018 album, Broken, and it calls back to the groovy metalcore heard on MMF classics like "The Sinner" and "Vices." Its got bouncy riffs, intense growls from Mullins and an absurdly melodic lead lick that cuts through the chugging breakdowns like a hot knife on butter. "With everything that's happened over the last year, it feels surreal to be releasing new music," Mullins said in a statement. "Creating during a pandemic came with a lot of challenges. But looking back, I think we needed that time off the road to fall in love with writing songs again. 'Blood & Water' is just a taste of what's to come and we couldn't be more excited for the world to finally hear it."
