Hear Metallica's First New Song in 6 Years "Lux Aeterna"

From their upcoming album '72 Seasons'

Order Metallica's new album, 72 Seasons, on CD and 2LP vinyl at Revolver's shop.

It's a great day for Metallica fans. The metal titans have announced a brand new album called 72 Seasons, their first since 2016's Hardwired... to Self-Destruct. It's due out this coming spring, and today they've shared its hard-hitting new single "Lux Æterna." Blast it above via YouTube.

Clocking in at 77 minutes, the 12-track album was produced by Greg Fidelman alongside Metallica's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Fidelman previously worked with the band on 2008's Death Magnetic, 2011's Lulu (with Lou Reed), Hardwired and their 2020 live album, S&M2.

Hetfield described the concept of the album's title as a reflection on the first 18 years (or 72 "seasons") of a person's life. "72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves," the Metallica frontman said. "The concept that we were told 'who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry."

72 Seasons is out April 14th, 2023 via the band's own Blackened Recordings. See the cover art and tracklisting below and pre-order it here.
