Hear Miley Cyrus Cover Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole" in 'Black Mirror' Episode

Pop musician performs reworked NIN classic in Season 5 of Netflix's hit tech-dystopia series

Season five of Netflix's hit show Black Mirror makes its streaming debut today, June 5th, and features the episode "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" starring real-life pop star Miley Cyrus playing a fictitious pop star. In an unexpected twist, the episode features a scene in which her character covers Nine Inch Nails' 1989 industrial-rock classic "Head Like a Hole."

Pitchfork reports that series creator Charlie Brooker got Trent Reznor's blessing to rework the NIN track to fit the scene. "He wanted to see the script and I got to re-write his lyrics in a chirpy way. I'm not the best lyricist in the world—in the first song she's singing: 'I'm stoked on ambition and verve' instead of 'You're gonna get what you deserve'."

Nine Inch Nails are also selling a collaborative T-shirt with the following description: "Limited Edition t-shirt featuring the iconic lyrics of Ashley O., from the Black Mirror episode Rachel, Jack, and Ashley, Too.'"

The shirts will ship out the week of June 24th and feature the inspirationally altered lyrics, "Head like a hole / I'm on a roll / Riding so high / Achieving my goals," a perfect gift for any smart-assed Reznor fan who loves to be in on the singer's tongue-in-cheek jokes.

For her part, Cyrus' husky voice is a nice match to Reznor's anthemic track, and added effects give it a mechanical feel in fitting with the near-futuristic vibe of the dystopian show's atmosphere.

A clip from the episode (see above) shows Cyrus performing the song onstage with an all-girl rock band while a stoked crowd goes wild. The episode's strange, seemingly sentient doll makes a brief appearance on the bar, bobbing along to the music.

Black Mirror season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
