Hear Myrkur's Haunting New Cover of 400-Year-Old Danish Folk Song

"Bonden og Kragen" appears on folk-metal firebrand's new 'Juniper' EP

Folk-metal firebrand Myrkur, aka Amalie Bruun, has just unveiled her haunting take on the traditional Danish folk song "Bonden og Kragen," which arrives with an appropriately stark video that leads viewers through an empty, dreary woodland.

"The song dates back to around 1600," says the Danish musician of the original composition. "The tale features a peasant/farmer who ventures into the woods and shoots a crow. A local Church Bishop gets word of this and demands to know what the peasant will use the dead crow for. Back then, the Church would take from the farmers and they were not fully allowed to own their livestock and crops. In response, the peasant starts making up a very long and unrealistic list of every part of the crow that he will use as a way refusing a tribute."

The stark clip shows only the peace of the woods with no creatures scurrying or humans interrupting the scene, thus allowing the listener to become immersed in Myrkur's smooth, lilting voice and minimal guitar accompaniment. "Bonden og Kragen" is her second single from upcoming EP Juniper and keeps in line with the lead track's stripped-down, traditional beauty. Releasing this Friday, the record comes amid the singer's first headlining European tour date and the news that she will perform a special Folkesange set at the Roadburn Festival in April 2019.
