Hear Occult Rockers Castle Evoke Slayer on Doomy New Song "Can't Escape the Evil"

Fuzzed-out San Francisco duo tell tales of serial killers and cult leaders on upcoming fifth album

In 2009, Liz Blackwell and Mat Davis came together in San Francisco to form Castle and have churned out heavy occult rock consistently ever since. Their latest song, "Can't Escape the Evil," is an anxious, discordant banger that brings to mind the hellish riffs of late Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman while staying on the fuzzed-out path of doom. Elements of traditional heavy metal combine with sludgy distortion to form an infectious groove, reaching a soaring apex in the dueling vocals of the chorus.

The new record, written in the band's current home in the Mojave Desert, is lyrically woven with dark Americana tales of cult leaders and serial killers. This new track, the first written for the album, was the impetus for this motif. "Our new song, 'Can't Escape the Evil,' has been around in riff form since the early days of the band, but we held off putting it on the last couple records because we wanted to make it the cornerstone of an album," says Davis. "When we finished writing 'Can't Escape the Evil,' it quickly became the centerpiece for the new record, Deal Thy Fate, and set the tone for the rest of the album."
