Hear Poppy's Sickly-Sweet New Song "So Mean"

Post-genre artist keeps us scratching our heads on latest 'Flux' single

Back in July, Poppy revealed that she's already following up her cacophonous 2021 EAT EP with a brand new album called Flux. Her first full-length since 2020's I Disagree is set to arrive in full on September 24th, but today (August 25th) the post-genre juggernaut is giving us another hint of what it sounds like with a new song called "So Mean."

Going by the grunge sound of her June single "Her" and July's title-track, it seemed like Flux was going to dial back the heaviness of her last few releases in favor of a more melodic direction, and "So Mean" makes that hypothesis even more evident. Although she opts for a spooky, muttery vocal delivery during the verses, the bulk of this track contains some of the catchiest and most sugary moments since Poppy started dabbling in metal a couple years back.

Its video sees her in a clad in a candy-pink dress dancing around an unsettling, Alice in Wonderland-style house while her bandmates play in full suits. Leave it to Poppy to throw nothing but curveballs and still manage to take us by surprise. Watch and listen above.

Flux is out September 24th via Sumerian Records and you can pre-order the vinyl from our shop on "black and aqua blue galaxy" wax.
