Japan's Mono are gods of instrumental post-rock, creating gorgeous textures that build and crash, all instilled with passion and nuanced feeling. Their latest track "Breathe" has many of their signatures — the emotional density, the sublimely crushing crescendos — but adds in a previously unused resource: the vocals of bassist Tamaki Kunishi. With a sad, breathy croon that sits alongside Nico's or that of a baritone Hope Sandoval, Tamaki adds depth to the song, not to mention a total "WTF, maybe you should have had vocals all along!" moment. The cut's accompanying video, a cinematically shot clip by French film director Julien Levy, only ratchets up the beauty juxtaposed with sadness, making for a truly remarkable visual pairing. Check out "Breathe" above, culled from Nowhere Now Here, which is due on January 25th, 2019, to coincide with Mono's 20-year anniversary. You can order your copy here.
