System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian's new solo EP, Perplex Cities, is less than two weeks away. Due out October 21st via Arloopa, the imminent mini-album represents "a completely different sound than what I've done before," according to the singer, leaning into a more electronic-ambient approach.
However, new single "I Spoke Up," released today (October 11th), finds Tankian embracing his world-music influences, delivering a somber, yearning ode that addresses his activism in regards to his home country, Armenia. Listen above.
In addition to the new song, Tankian has also released a video in which he discusses his forthcoming performance of "Invocations," an original orchestral suite that he will debut on April 29 at The Soraya at California State University Northridge. Watch below.
"'Invocations' is an operatic suite that can best be described as music that calls on spirits to co-inspire and wander," the SOAD vocalist explained. "The music for invocations was written over a long period of time, over many years, composing for film and being inspired by the orchestral ensemble and choir. I find these pieces from all of the compositions I've ever done, they invoke a spirituality in us. They invoke this connection in us, that music is meant to do."
Not only is Tankian overseeing the performance, and singing on several of the pieces, he has also assembled a team of diverse vocalists: renowned tenor Brian Thorsett, world music singer Azam Ali, sound healer Francesca Genco and Abysmal Dawn frontman Charles Elliot. Backing them will be the CSUN Symphony Orchestra, ethnic instrumentalists (including duduk master Jivan Gasparyan Jr.) and a full choir. Tickets for the one-time outing are available now.
