Hear Svalbard Singer's 'Skyrim'-Themed Black-Metal Project Noctule

Serena Cherry unleashes epic, galloping single "Wretched Abyss"

U.K. post-hardcore crew Svalbard dropped a critically acclaimed underground-favorite LP last year, the weighty, emotionally-charged When I Die, Will I Get Better?, the band's third full-length. Vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Serena Cherry is not one to rest on her laurels, however — she's already back with the debut album, Wretched Abyss, from her solo project Noctule, which specializes in "Skyrim-themed black metal." Today (February 24th), she's teamed with Revolver to premiere the project's introductory salvo and the LP's title track, six majestic, galloping minutes filled with diabolical screams, windswept riffery and pummeling blast beats. Check out the song and its evocative music video above.

"'Wretched Abyss' is a song about Hermaeus Mora — who is the daedric prince of fate, knowledge and memory in Skyrim," Cherry tells us. "He often appears in a Lovecraftian form of tentacles in the game, this imagery combined with his unsettling psychological questline is what inspired me to write this song.

"The video was shot at The Gryphon, which is Bristol's best heavy metal pub and venue. We filled the live room with smoke and candles to create that ethereal vibe. The video was filmed by David Gregory and James Morgan of Cineoteric Films."

Wretched Abyss will be released on May 28th, 2021 via Translation Loss Records in North America and Church Road Records in U.K./Europe. You can pre-order it now.
