Unlike many of the 53 artists on Metallica's upcoming Blacklist covers compilation, Weezer have a long track record of putting their own spin on songs from all throughout the rock history playbook. In fact, the power-pop heroes released their very own covers album back in 2019 that featured a rendition of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid," and frontman Rivers Cuomo has consistently proven himself to be one of the best shredders in their corner of the alt-rock world.
Therefore, whereas J Balvin's reggaeton remake of "Wherever I May Roam" or St. Vincent's funk rendition of "Sad But True" felt like pointed attempts to suck the metal out of Metallica, Weezer's "Enter Sandman" cover sounds like their best to briefly be Metallica.
Besides replacing a few guitar licks with keyboard lines and making the outro a little softer and sparser, Weezer stay pretty damn faithful to the way Metallica wrote and performed their most popular song. If you like Weezer, then you'll probably enjoy their spin on this thing, and even if you don't like Weezer, their take will certainly not offend you.
As has been the routine every week since Metallica announced The Metallica Blacklist and the gigundo deluxe box set edition of the "Black Album" 30th anniversary reissue, the thrash titans also unveiled an offering from the vault. This week, it's a live version of "Through the Never" that was recorded in Sacramento on January 11th, 1992. It rips.
