I'll never forget the time my buddy showed me this new song called, "Reinventing Your Exit." I was floored. It was perfect — everything I needed in a song! It was heavy and aggressive, but also super melodic and simple. It was the first time I had ever heard Underoath's record, They're Only Chasing Safety. I immediately ate it up and couldn't help but learn every word to every song. By the time I was a senior in high school, I was already a big fan. I was hooked.
I played in a lot of bands growing up, and no matter which one, we were always striving for that perfect balance of chaos and melody. This record was the blueprint. From the drumming, to the singing, to the crazy electronic production, every song has its place. This obviously made this record super influential to a lot of artists in the "scene." I believe it's because everyone who listened to this record, whether they loved or hated it, respected it without question. It was that big and it truly defined the genre. The thing I love about this album is that even today, it can be put into any post-hardcore or rock playlist and still works.
I'll never forget all the road trips this album played during the ride, or seeing them perform live while we screamed, "Drowning in my sleep!" during the breakdown in "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door." They're Only Chasing Safety will always hold a special place for me. It paved the way for artists like myself and others that, at the time, didn't really have a place to fit in music. It wasn't mainstream. It wasn't pop, or rock. It was something different. It was special.
