Maynard James Keenan Talks Army Experience, Avoiding Comfort Zone With Lars Ulrich

Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer frontman guests on Metallica drummer's Beats 1 show 'It's Electric!'

Maynard James Keenan is the latest guest on Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich's Beats 1 show It's Electric! The first half of the two-part episode premieres this Sunday (April 21st) at 3 p.m. PST/6 p.m. EST on Beats 1 on Apple Music, with the second half airing a week later. In two exclusive clips from the wide-ranging interview, the Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer frontman discusses his time in the army — which he joined in order to pay for art school — and the challenge of "staying relevant" for an aging artist without being "stenchy" about it.

"Be OK with not being part of the future" Keenan advises in the clip above. "If you can get your head around that, that you're not going to a part of the next generations's focus ... For egomaniacs like us, that's hard."

UPDATE: Apple Music has released part one of Ulrich's interview with Keenan. Topics discussed include the absurdly lead-up to Eat the Elephant, how the frontman pushed himself out of his comfort zone, his early aspirations, and more.

Since its launch in May 2017, Ulrich's It's Electric! has featured guests including Jack White, Dave Grohl, Iggy Pop, James Murphy, Metallica, Dillinger Escape Plan, Rancid's Lars Frederiksen, Avenged Sevenfold's M. Shadows, Royal Blood and more.

Keenan is about to release his first new album with A Perfect Circle in nearly 14 years — Eat the Elephant, which drops tomorrow (April 20th).
