In 1999, Big 4 titans Metallica joined forces with the San Francisco symphony to record live album S&M over two nights of groundbreaking performance that wove together heavy metal and orchestral music. In celebration of both the 20th anniversary of that occurrence and San Francisco finally receiving a proper arena venue, the two institutions will join once more for the grand opening of the Chase Center, a 18,064-seat venue coming to the city's Mission Bay neighborhood.

At a press conference announcing the event, drummer Lars Ulrich stated, "This is beyond exciting on so many fronts. The fact that San Francisco is finally getting a much needed world-class arena, the fact that Metallica get to be part of the opening celebration, the fact that we get to revisit S&M 20 years later, and the fact that we get to share the stage not only with the San Francisco Symphony once again, but with the legend himself, MTT [symphony director Michael Tilson Thomas], as he kicks off his final year as music director here in San Francisco. This is mind-blowingly awesome ... Bring it on ASAP!"

Thomas, who has been at the helm of the SFS since 1995, also commented that he and his crew are "delighted" to be working with the rockers again. "I'm happy to join with my friends in Metallica to make this an extraordinary only-in-San Francisco music event," ," he enthused. The full press conference can be viewed on Twitter at this location and shows the conductor, Ulrich and Metallica singer James Hetfield being interviewed panel-style.
