Pantera Play Knotfest Chile Without Rex Brown Due to Illness

Derek Engemann and Bobby Landgraf filled in

Earlier today (December 11th), Pantera performed at Knotfest Chile in Santiago without OG bassist Rex Brown. Cattle Decapitation's Derek Engemann — who also notably plays with Pantera frontman Philip Anselmo in both the singer's solo band, the Illegals, and his black-metal side project Scour — filled in for most of the set. Bobby Landgraf (Honky, ex-Down) jumped in for the last song, "Cowboys From Hell," as can be seen above.

In an official statement, the Knotfest Chile organizers cited "health problems" for Brown's absence. Local radio station Futuro clarified the situation, reporting that the bassist had tested positive for COVID-19 and flown home to the U.S. from Bogotá, Colombia, where Pantera played Knotfest Colombia on Friday (December 9th), in order to quarantine. This would mean that he'd miss the remainder of the band's shows in South America this year.

Pantera's current lineup is, of course, rounded out by guitarist Zakk Wylde and drummer Charlie Benante, playing in place of the group's founding brothers, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. Benante shared a short video of the Santiago concert, where temperatures reportedly topped 90 degrees, along with the following message: "#chile was on fire!!!! We missed Rex tonight , get better buddy! Damn it was a hot one".
