There was no one quite like Type O Negative. They were four Brooklyn dudes who sprung up out of the city's extreme hardcore scene and evolved into legit (if tongue-and-cheek) goth-metal icons. From their 1991 debut, Slow, Deep and Hard to 1993 breakout Bloody Kisses to their 2007 swan song Dead Again, frontman Peter Steele and the band cast a long shadow with their haunting music and inimitable, imposing presence.
Sadly, their influential career was cut short by the untimely death of Steele in 2010, but the Drab Four's legacy carries on. Type O left the world with so many great songs that continue to inspire generations of gloom-loving, heavy-music fans — including Philip H. Anselmo. Below, the former Pantera singer sounds off on his favorite Type O Negative song.
"Xero Tolerance"
I have many favorite Type O songs, but when I heard "Xero Tolerance" I knew I loved this band. Peter Steele was one of my all-time favorites: as a frontman, a songwriter and a person. He was talented and hilarious. Their first LP, Slow, Deep and Hard, has got to be my fave, and I'd be remiss if I didn't add that I loved the band Peter put together: Josh [Silver] of miserable keyboards, Kenny [Hickey] on the ax, and Johnny Kelly on the drums. Pantera toured with Type O several times and those were some of the best tours, because everyone was cool. And just sharing the stage with those cats was a joy. I could [say] hundreds of more sentences on this subject, but to cut to the chase: I loved Type O Negative.
