Hyperbole aside, 2020 has suuuucked. From political divisiveness to civil unrest to the continued COVID-19 crisis, this year has served up serious challenges. Thankfully, the artists we love have continued to create and share killer music to help us get through the dark days. We know what albums made our Best of 2020 list, but we wanted to find out what the musicians themselves were spinning this year.
With that in mind, we asked Pantera icon Philip H. Anselmo — whose new "depression-core" project En Minor released their debut LP, When the Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out, this fall — to weigh in with the songs that helped him survive 2020. See his picks below.
David Bowie - "'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore," Blackstar (2016)
This entire record is fucking awesome. Bowie nailed it, and went out in style. Not many get to pull this off, so bravo to His Majesty. "'Tis a Pity" is such an attitude song, as in attitude. Gotta love it.
The Smiths - "Well I Wonder," Meat Is Murder (1985)
Do I really need to praise the Smiths anymore than I have in the past? This record is dire and always a go-to for me — especially this song. When I need some motivation, I usually put this record on.
Krzysztof Komeda - "Walk on the Water," Cul-de-sac Soundtrack (1966)
Like the character from this movie [by director Roman Polanski], I got hooked on this soundtrack. Komeda is one of my favorite composers. He's scored beautifully for some of my favorite films.
Pink Fairies - "War Girl," Neverneverland (1971)
Awesome song! Under the radar always, going back to this record is always rewarding. Pink Fairies are sneering rock-punk-alt kings and a secret weapon inside the crazy world of music.
Popol Vuh - The Werner Herzog Soundtracks (2011)
This is the soundtrack from Nosferatu [the Vampyre] film [1979], and I adore it! Dark, foreboding and shuddering! The bleakness of the film only gets more miserable with this blessed music. Incredible band.
Mark Reeder - "Pure," Nekromantik 2 Soundtrack (1991)
Anyone who's seen the Nekromantik films will tell you, "The soundtrack is awesome!" Count me in of the same opinion. To this day, I'm not sure if I've ever seen anything like this flick, and I've seen some flicks! Powerful, violent, romantic, grotesque, and... that damned soundtrack!
