Revocation Debut Scorching New Song "Of Unworldly Origin," Detail Next Album

Death-metal ripper's accompanying visual includes witch make-outs, colonial costumes

Extreme-metal outfit Revocation recently announced their new album The Outer Ones, due out September 28th via Metal Blade. Today (July 10th), they've unveiled the album's opening face-melter, "Of Unworldly Origin." It arrives accompanied by a spooky, slightly silly music video directed by David Brodsky and the band's vocalist/guitarist Dave Davidson; the clip follows a man in colonial garb on his doomed journey into a witch's lair.

Whereas his outfit might look like it came from a Party City after-Halloween sale, his resolve is pure steel. Even as his fellow Yankee Doodle dandies spew fountains of blood and languish in the dirt, our hero ventures further in, eventually meeting — and making out with — the witch (who turns out to be quite stunning, at least until the spell breaks). Talk about a weird first date.

The follow-up to 2016's Great Is Our Sin, The Outer Ones finds Revocation shifting focus from proggy thrash to unforgiving death metal. "I knew that I wanted to go in a darker direction, and this is our most death-metal album to date," Davidson says of the record. "Sometimes when death metal bands go down the prog route they lose some of that edge, but we wanted to keep the aggression at the forefront of what we do while still pushing our boundaries."

Whereas Great Is Our Sin took inspiration from history and folklore, The Outer Ones is Revocation's love letter to science fiction; its title refers to the various godlike alien entities dreamed up by legendary author H.P. Lovecraft. "Since the new music we were writing was so evil and spacey in sections it seemed to be the right title to fit the overall vibe. But while the lyrical content is largely influenced by such writings, in every allegory there is of course some reflection of the real world, so I enjoy writing in a way that could have one overlaying meaning and then another deeper, symbolic meaning as well."
