Fire, bones, cloaks and neck-snapping riffery

Carnivora call themselves "Witch City metal," which makes sense since the hard-hitting quintet hails from none other than Salem, Massachusetts, the site of the infamous 17th century witch trials. Back in October, they unleashed the concussive single "Bogdweller," which showcased a slick, whip-lashing sound highlighted by singer Haydee Irizarry's mix of throat-shredding guttural vocals and infectious melodic crooning. Today (July 24th), they've teamed with Revolver to premiere its follow-up, the aptly titled "Witch City," along with its occult-themed music video, which captures a becloaked coven (including Irizarry) engaged in a fiery ritual. Like "Bogdweller," the new cut was produced by Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall, Act of Defiance) and mixed and mastered by Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Hatebreed), but it also expands on its predecessor's approach, taking Carnivora into hookier and more-cleanly-sung territory than ever.

"As a band from Salem, we wanted to pay homage with 'Witch City' by drawing parallels between the witch trials and current times," the group comments in a joint statement. "The song explores a more dynamic and melodic approach to our sound than anything we've tapped into before. ... Punchdance Studios directed the music video and brought massive depth to the imagery behind the song. Shout-out to our Witch City Coven for helping us capture the right vibes." Watch and listen above.
