See Alexi Laiho Record Bodom After Midnight EP Weeks Before Death

Previously unreleased studio footage from November 2020

Last month marked the one-year anniversary of Children of Bodom bandleader Alexi Laiho's untimely death, and collaborator Ykä Järvinen has commemorated the milestone by posting previously unreleased studio footage from the making of Laiho's final recording, Bodom After Midnight's Paint the Sky With Blood EP. Watch above and below.

Bodom After Midnight was formed in 2020 after Children of Bodom's dissolution. In addition to Laiho, the band included guitarist Daniel Freyberg (COB), bassist Mitja Toivonen (ex-Santa Cruz), drummer Waltteri Väyrynen (Paradise Lost) and live keyboardist Vili Itäpelto. The recording sessions for Paint the Sky With Blood took place in November of that year.

Järvinen directed, edited and produced the music video for the EP's title track and lead single. "I have quite a lot footage from these Bodom After Midnight studio sessions, which never got released because maestro left this realm way too soon," he commented in a message accompanying the YouTube release of the second studio video. "I really don't know if any more of this stuff will be released, but here's another small clip I did edit over a year ago as a demo for the guys. I hope you enjoy it."

Laiho died at age 41 on December 29th, 2020, in his home in Helsinki, Finland. The cause of death was alcohol-induced degeneration of the liver and pancreas connective tissue. His ashes were buried in December 2021 — nearly a year after his passing — at the Malmi Cemetery in his hometown.
