Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell had a special connection with Pantera. As the grunge axeman recounted after Vinnie Paul passed away in 2018, Cantrell first met the drummer and his brother Dimebag Darrell when he was working in Texas in 1985, and after drifting apart in the Nineties, the three of them eventually reconnected and became close enough to consider one another "brothers."
That brotherly love was on full display during a Pantera performance on February 6th, 2001 — just six months before the band unknowingly played their last show ever — when Cantrell joined the power-groove titans on stage for the almighty "Walk."
"Fuckin' Jerry from Alice in Chains, look at that motherfucker," is how Phil Anselmo warmly introduced their guest to a crowd full of hollering fans in San Jose, California. Without further adieu, Dime kicked into the main riff and Pantera started strolling with a second powerhouse guitarist who added even more punch to that timeless lick.
Once the solo came around, Dime annihilated his fretboard as usual while Cantrell held down the chords, and then they both shot up the necks of their guitars and held that piercing final note in unison while bending back on their heels and then snapping forward to stare into each other's eyes.
