A dark, sci-fi vision of technology and control

Back in May, Swedish theatrical metal troupe Avatar dropped "Silence in the Age of Apes," the concussive lead single off the band's highly anticipated new full-length, Hunter Gatherer. Then in June, the group followed with the equally hard-hitting "God of Sick Dreams." Today (July 9th) Avatar are back with the third single off the LP, the chugging, anthemic "Colossus," which arrives with the most cinematic video yet to be released in support of the forthcoming album. A dystopian look at technology gone awry, the clip is in perfect keeping with the quintet's darker direction with Hunter Gatherer. Watch and listen above.

The forthcoming album marks a "new era" for the band, including a revamped visual aesthetic as well as a heavier sound and grimmer themes. Asked of the shift in approach after Hunter Gatherer's more comedically inclined predecessor, Avatar Country, Eckerström told us, "It's where we belong, ultimately. We use metal as a torch to illuminate darker and darker places within and around us. Avatar Country was cathartic. We were at a point where things needed to celebrated, more than anything our fans' willingness to take all these trips with us. Once that statement was made, it was always time to move forward."
