See Avenged Sevenfold Break Down "Bat Country": From WTF Intro to Dance Beats

M. Shadows: "It still kind of blows me away that a song like this could even take off"

Avenged Sevenfold's in-depth "Breakdown" video series has finally hit the song that kicked off their mainstream success, "Bat Country." The band's January 2006 performance of the tune on MTV series Total Request Live exposed them to a massive audience and cemented their transition from underground metalcore act to arena-ready metal juggernaut.

"It still kind of blows me away that a song like this could even take off like that," frontman M. Shadows says of the song, discussing it with A7X bassist Johnny Christ in part one of the Breakdown. The two go through the bizarre and hilarious spoken-word opening sections of the track, laughing and tossing around some "what the fuck?" exclamations while they reminisce on the eccentric parts. The bandmates also delve into the song's punk feel, dance beats and more over the course of their look back.
