Today, June 14th, marks the release of Gold & Grey, the fifth record from prog-sludge boundary-pushers Baroness. To commemorate, the band has released a stripped-down clip for the surprisingly sylvan "Tourniquet." Directed by Pam Strohm, the impressionistic, emotive video ties in the album's color palette — which marks the last entry in Baroness' color-wheel themed string of records — through tons of smoke and cutaway shots to flowers and anatomical hearts while John Baizley and Co. deliver a performance that's equally introspective and ripping.
"I have very mixed emotions about it right now," Baizley told us about completing the color-wheel concept. "It's been such a huge part of the past 12 years of my life that sending it off and feeling like I've finished something is a really daunting concept for me. With everything else, I feel like this band is just continuing to evolve. It's such a big part of me at this point, that it's really hard for me to let go of that idea. It's also really necessary, because it's been exhausting to have stuck to such a particular idea for such a long time. To be working on one concept for 12 years, it's ridiculous. But that's also is how I do everything."
Baroness are featured on the cover of Revolver's June/July issue, and they're playing an acoustic, album-release show at Rough Trade in Brooklyn tonight (June 14th). After the set, drop by the Revolver Studio at 67 West Street, Unit 107, in Brooklyn, New York for a pop-up showcase of the art of Gold & Grey. Doors for the Rough Trade show open at 6:30 p.m., and the Revolver event opens at 8 p.m.
If you're not in the NYC area, you can still catch Baroness live when they kick off their Gold & Grey tour in South America later this month, with North American and European tours to follow. See full dates below.
