At the first stop of their current co-headlining tour with Deafheaven on Friday, March 8th in Houston, Texas, Atlanta progressive sludge metal act Baroness debuted a new song reportedly called "Borderlines" taken from their as-yet-untitled upcoming fifth studio album, which is the follow-up to 2015's Purple. The new song is the band's first new material to be heard since guitarist Gina Gleason took over for Pete Adams following his departure in June 2017.
With off-kilter time signatures, soaring guitar licks, and beautifully harmonized bits, the song seems to hit all the key points of a solid Baroness single. Near the final 60 to 90 seconds of the six-and-a-half-minute tune, a spaced-out, experimental jam happens over drummer Sebastian Thomson steady pummeling.
The tour continues tonight, March 11th, in Arizona and loops over across the West Coast before heading back east later this month. No date is set for the forthcoming record's release, but keep up with their official band Instagram where they've been dropping hints for weeks.
