See Bauhaus Play "Bela Lugosi's Dead" at First Show in 13 Years

Goth pioneers reunited onstage at Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles

Goths rejoice: Bauhaus are back with all four original members manning their dark stations. The godfathers of the genre delivered a stellar performance at their first show since 2008 when they hit the stage at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles Sunday, November 3rd, and expertly sauntered through 1979 classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead."

The fan-shot footage above focuses in on singer Peter Murphy cutting a vampiric figure as the moody, meandering intro leads into that iconically creepy bossa nova backbeat. David J and Daniel Ash bookend the vocalist, standing stark and washed out in a strong spotlight as he croons deeply and the chaotic energy builds.

The L.A. performance was the band's first since their ill-fated 2008 reunion, which produced the album Go Away White, but the four couldn't make it work long enough to see through a promotional tour. That LP was their first since 1983 before their initial breakup, eventually leading to Murphy's successful mainstream career while the remaining three members — David J, Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins — formed Love and Rockets and hit it big with singles like 1989's "So Alive," which peaked at No. 3 on Billboard's Hot 100.

In addition to "Bela Lugosi's Dead," the reunited band played a number of other songs set list that haven't made an live appearance since Bauhaus' heyday, including "Spy in the Cab" (last played in 1983), "The Man With X-Ray Eyes" (1982) and "The Three Shadows, Part II" (1983). The group closed things out with a four-song encore that saw them dig up some of their favorite cover songs like David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust," which they first trotted out on 1982 album The Sky's Gone Out. Bauhaus will keep the reunion going at the Palladium tonight, November 4th, and are set to wrap things up with a third performance on December 1st. In early 2020, Murphy is expected to do a run of make-up solo shows for the gigs the singer was forced to cancel after he suffered a heart attack in New York City earlier this year.
