U.K. shape-shifters Bring Me the Horizon have unleashed their new single "Parasite Eve," and true to frontman Oli Sykes' promises of a heavier direction, the song hits hard, fusing pop and electronic elements with guttural vocals and raging instrumentation. Its unnerving music video hits hard, too. Watch and listen above.
In BMTH's recently released 10th video update from the group's home recording sessions, Sykes reaffirmed his prior comments that the group's next album would lean into their aggro, metallic inclinations more than their last two albums, the polarizing alt-rock LP amo and the experimental ambient offering Music to..., did "For the songs we are working on for this new record, we knew that they were going to be a bit more aggressive in nature," he said. "This first record is very much a protest record. It's trying to capture the anger, sadness, frustration, fear, paranoia and everything I think we are all collectively going through right now."
The video also reveals that the band have been collaborating with DOOM Eternal composer Mick Gordon — the video game being one of Sykes' go-to recreation during the COVID-19 lockdown. "As I was playing it, I absolutely fell in love with the soundtrack," the singer enthused. "It's fucking crazy, it's heavy as fuck ... At first, when we were writing 'Parasite Eve,' especially, I was referencing a lot of this DOOM game. I was playing it during the day and then me and Jordan [Fish, BMTH keyboardist and producer] would work at night using it as a reference because the sounds in there sound so huge and so hitting in a way I haven't heard."
