See Deftones' Exuberant "Be Quiet and Drive" Performance on 'Conan' in 1998

Late-night clip captures alt-metal band in prime form

On 4/20, 1998, the Deftones had a lot more to celebrate than just weed. Their breakthrough sophomore album, Around the Fur, had dropped in October, and the second single off the record, "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)," had hit radio and was winning over new fans while showcasing the group's newly expansive sound.

The ascendant alt-metal band appeared on the Late Night With Conan O'Brien (Fabio was the night's main guest), and threw down with fire and exuberance. Video of their performance captures the band in prime form: A baby-faced Chino Moreno croons and dances, bounding skate-punk style in baggy pants characteristic of the time, while Stephen Carpenter and Chi Cheng headbang, the latter unleashing feral screams from behind his thrashing dreadlocks. Check it out above.

Below, watch our original doc with Chino Moreno and Stephen Carpenter, looking back at the making of Deftones' Around the Fur:
