On May 20th, 2003, Sacramento alt-metal heroes Deftones released their self-titled album, the follow-up to 2000's watershed LP White Pony, an impossible masterpiece to try and top. Not that Chino Moreno and Co. didn't try, and heroically so. Led by singles "Hexagram" and "Minerva," Deftones, with its iconic skull-and-roses cover art, is one of the band's widest ranging and most adventurous offerings, fully reflecting both their heaviest and most ethereal sides.
Six month after the album's release, on November 26th, Deftones appeared as the musical guests on NBC's Last Call With Carson Daly and delivered a interstellar performance of the shoegazing "Minerva." Though the closing credits begin to roll sacrilegiously about midway through the video, the band's intensity still cuts through, with Moreno wrenching sky-scrapping notes from his throat as he and guitarist Stephen Carpenter churn out waves of roiling feedback.
