See DOJA CAT play controversial nu-metal version of "Say So" at MTV EMAs in 2020

Aussie guitarist Plini called foul

Pop star Doja Cat recently broke the internet with quotes from a new Variety interview in which she revealed her plans to put together a band and "explore raw, unfiltered hardcore punk."

As unlikely as this might sound to those who only know the singer from her chart-topping pop hits, the fact is that Doja Cat has already dipped more than a toe into heavy-music waters. In 2020, she stole the show at the MTV European Music Awards by performing a dark, gothy nu-metal version of her sleek disco smash "Say So."

Doja Cat opened the performance by crawling out of a TV screen, in an apparent nod to the horror classic The Ring. From there she snarled the song's bubblegum lyrics backed by a creepy band of prosthetic-wearing animal-faced instrumentalists. It all culminated in a fiery guitar solo.

The performance was not without controversy, however: As it turns out, the Musical Director behind the metalized rendition sampled snippets from Australian shredder Plini's song "Handmade Cities" for the EMAs production, and did so without getting proper permission. Doja Cat eventually apologized for the transgression, and Plini took it all with good humor. No matter what, the performance is "awesome," as Plini admitted himself — watch above.
