Bring Me the Horizon frontman Oliver Sykes almost bit off more than he could chew when it came time to make his directorial debut with the band's latest music video, "In the Dark," which stars Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker in the main role.
"We were in the midst of planning to shoot the video with a director in L.A.," the singer recalled. "Three days before the shoot I got a call from Forest saying he was in London and available, so ignoring everyone who said it was impossible to make it happen in time, I called our videographer Brian and asked him if he wanted to help me direct a video. Two days later we were shooting in London! It was a crazy, emotional few days and I was very lucky to bag an insanely talented crew to assist me."
Despite the dramatic turmoil surrounding the filming schedule, Sykes and his crew managed to capture a stunning performance from Whitaker as he's strapped into a futuristic machine that plays out apparent scenes from his past, including traumatic ones, as vignettes from other scientific labs conducting experiments appear like scenes straight out of Black Mirror. By the end, Whitaker is left alone once more having undergone a full brain-mapping, shedding some solitary tears as the screens in front him break down into chaos. As for how the esteemed actor came to the role, as Sykes revealed to NME, Bring Me the Horizon met him a few years when he accompanied his daughter, who is a fan of the band, to a show.
