Mastodon-approved NYC band drops far-out visual for "Army!" from new album 'Black Gaia'

Netherlands have been quietly weaving themselves into the fabric of popular metal culture for a decade now, playing alongside legends like Napalm Death, Melt Banana, and Gojira. Their continued dedication for making experimental, genre-bending albums paid off in the form of being hand-selected by prog metal giants Mastodon to fill the opening slot on their upcoming tour with Dinosaur Jr.

The tour coincides with the release of Netherlands' fifth album Black Gaia. The record's first single "ARMY!" debuted in July, and now the band has revealed a visual companion in the form of a stark music video featuring eccentric touches like multi-lingual subtitles and a corpse painted sign language interpreter played by Bangladeafy's Jon Ehlers. Netherlands singer Timo Ellis expounds on the song's meaning:

"'Army!' is about the paradox of living in a modern first world capitalist society, where a foundation premium is placed upon hyper-individualism, culminating in many people seeing themselves as 'maverick/bohemian forces for change,' based only on their consumer habits/branding/optics, while practically speaking, they're simultaneously participating in a sinister, imperialist, Earth-destroying juggernaut."
