Knocked Loose are one of the biggest hardcore bands in the world right now, but they're nowhere close to resting on their laurels. Today (October 13th), the Kentucky wrecking crew have unleashed a brand new EP called A Tear in the Fabric of Life that comes paired with its very own animated film, and it's quite possibly the heaviest and most conceptually dense thing they've ever released.

Following their scene-conquering 2019 album, A Different Shade of Blue, the six-song project tells the story of a gruesome car accident and the lengths someone will go to seek healing while in the throes of "extreme grief." That tale is brought to life in the visual component of the project by director and animator Magnus Jonsson, who crafted a spine-tingling, ghastly figure to play the story's embattled protagonist.

It's a wild spectacle, but even more striking are the songs themselves, which are utterly pulverizing metallic hardcore bangers that take more influence from death metal and mathcore than Knocked Loose have on previous releases.

The individual songs will hit streaming services later this afternoon, but for now you can take in the full project — visuals, music and all — above via YouTube.

"It's a story about extreme grief and the levels a person is willing to go through to get rid of it," frontman Bryan Garris said of the concept. "The story follows a main character through a traumatic car crash late one night in the woods that leaves his partner deceased, and from there you spiral with him into the depression and guilt that comes with being the cause of something so detrimental."

He continued, "This is the first time we really dove in and tried to create something sonically that evokes a different range of emotions and over all something that introduces tension and anxiety with a massive pay off. The story is told not only through words but through the music as well, which proved to be our biggest challenge in writing. Lyrically this story ended up being much more personal than we initially intended. We started with the idea to tell a fictional story but throughout the process, I found ways to incorporate real feelings of loss and mourning, as well as anger and self doubt."

"I've always been a very personal writer and this was originally a step away from that, into something more artistic," he added. "But in the end, it was just as therapeutic as writing a regular Knocked Loose record, and I think you'll be able to hear that."

A Tear in the Fabric of Life is digitally out now via Pure Noise Records while physicals are available for pre-order here. Revolver has an exclusive vinyl variant on "translucent blood red" wax that's limited to just 500 copies. Order yours before they're gone!
