See Korn Talk Grueling Process, Isolation, Experiments Behind 'The Nothing'

Jonathan Davis: "I locked myself in the studio and was like, 'Everyone leave me the fuck alone'"

In the latest episode of their enlightening docuseries looking back on 2019, Korn dive deep into their influences and experience in the studio working on their critically acclaimed latest LP, The Nothing. The process took the band's guitarists, James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch, all across the country on a quest to find the best sound. "From Bakersfield to L.A. to Nashville," Munky says, with Head finishing the thought: "We just write, write, write and write some more."

The two explain that they wrote in "blocks" before sitting with the songs for a while then going back in to hand the material over to singer Jonathan Davis, who was grieving and healing after the death of his estranged wife Devin, and tasked to put words to the heavy new tracks.

"This is the first time I've had any chance to take my time," Davis says in the video. "I locked myself in the studio and was like, 'Everyone leave me the fuck alone. Lemme do what I gotta do.'" He details the new techniques he used while he created alone in the studio, including setting up different types of microphones and experimenting with harmonies in a way he hadn't before, sometimes building up to 20 vocal tracks on one single chorus. The singer notes that the process took much longer this time around, but the end result was "humongous, sweet vocal bits." Watch above.
