Singer details backstory behind emotional 'Black Labyrinth' cut in new making-of video

Jonathan Davis has shared the third episode of "Through the Black Labyrinth," his 13-part video series breaking down each track off his inaugural solo effort, Black Labyrinth. The latest installment chronicles the emotional backstory of album opener "Underneath My Skin," which finds the Korn singer examining his maddening battle with depression through the lens of the Ganzfeld Experiment, a form of sensory deprivation used to test for ESP that functions as one of the album's primary motifs. It also finds him revealing the cerebral inspiration behind Black Labyrinth's title.

Just as the song's tactile title suggests, "Underneath My Skin" is a song inspired by the senses: in Davis' case, the physical sensations he felt while fending off depression and addiction. "It's what you feel like when you're going through that stuff, and you're feel like you're going batshit crazy," the singer explains. "You feel your skin crawling — there's something actually underneath there. It goes back to the Ganzfeld Experiment, those visions and stuff...I wanted to kind of give that vibe of tripping out."

Later, Davis' delves into the origins of Black Labyrinth's title. "It represents my brain," he says, eyes wide, "A never-ending labyrinth where I turn and I hit obstacles and I gotta to go around and find my way through everything." Basically, he says with a laugh, "My life has been a giant, black labyrinth."

Davis' Black Labyrinth is out now. Before tackling "Underneath My Skin," Davis released videos examining "Basic Needs" and "Medicate."
