See Lars Ulrich Talk 'Master of Puppets' With Metallica Bandmates

James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Rob Trujillo to appear on special 'It's Electric!' episode

This week's episode of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich's "It's Electric!" Beats 1 show on Apple Music will be a special one for Big Four fans, as the drummer will be hosting his bandmates — James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo — for an in-depth talk commemorating their new deluxe reissue of Metallica's classic 1986 album, Master of Puppets. The conversation was taped at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp, Belgium, amidst the band's European WorldWired Tour.

"When people ask me about Master of Puppets it's hard for me to separate the record from the experiences," says Ulrich at the outset of the conversation, which finds the band offering up their recollections of making that pivotal album — from Hetfield detailing the lyrical inspirations behind Master of Puppets, to Hammett reflecting on how last bassist Cliff Burton's love of R.E.M. influenced the album, to revealing stories on how Burton came up with the epic instrumental "Orion." Elsewhere in the interview, Ulrich and Hammett break down the title track's immortal lick, and discuss their general approach to riff-building.

Part 1 of this two-part podcast will air this Sunday, November 12th, 3 p.m. PST / 6 p.m. EST (full video will appear on YouTube Monday, November 13th, at 9 a.m. PST), with part two airing next Sunday November 19th. In the meantime, check out excerpts from the episode below.
