See Linkin Park Play "Faint" With Avenged Sevenfold's M. Shadows and Synyster Gates

High-octane performance at 2017 Chester Bennington tribute concert

On October 27th, 2017, Linkin Park honored their fallen frontman, Chester Bennington, with a massive tribute concert that featured tons of covers, deep cuts and hits from throughout the nu-metal band's discography. For many of the songs, Linkin Park's surviving members invited longtime friends to the stage, and for their performance of the Meteora standout, "Faint," they called upon Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows and guitarist Synyster Gates.

Although Linkin Park and A7X have always made very different types of music, both bands came to dominate the mainstream metal landscape throughout the 2000s, and Shadows became very close friends with Linkin Park guitarist/rapper Mike Shinoda in the process, as he told us about a month before the tribute show back in October 2017. After some deliberation, the band ended up tapping Shadows and Gates to appear during the 2003 song "Faint," and the performance was nothing less than electrifying.

As Gates wandered the stage with his axe, Shadows ran out during the first verse and provided background vocals while Shinoda rapped, only to take the reigns during the hook and belt the refrain in tandem with Shinoda. It's strange to hear Shadows' raspy croon outside of the A7X setting, but his vocal range worked surprisingly well alongside Shinoda's. The two vocalists shared a couple tender moments while singing beside one another, but for the most part, they managed to look like they were having a ball despite the dour circumstances.
