On December 31st, 2000, Marilyn Manson was fresh off the release of his fourth album, Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), just the month before, which made the MTV New Year's Eve Bash an ideal setting for him to promote the record. The final piece in the triptych that also includes Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals, Holy Wood represented a marked return to the industrial-metal sound of the former LP after the glam digression of the latter. It was also Manson's first album since the 1999 Columbine massacre and his vilification in its immediate aftermath, but if the shock rocker was any worse for wear from the public pillorying, he wasn't showing it on MTV. To the contrary, he threw himself fully into the New Year's celebration, cranking through his then-new single "Disposable Teens" as well as a cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender," joined by his girlfriend at the time, Rose McGowan, who danced the night away alongside Rosario Dawson and other famous friends. Watch above for a nostalgic throwback to surely not simpler, but possibly even stranger, times.
