Metal royalty unite to cover the punk pioneers who inspired them

Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold are two metal bands who've never been shy about their love of punk music. Both groups came up listening to the four-chord ditties of bands like the Misfits and the Ramones, and at one show in Berlin in 2006, Metallica surprised their fans with a surprise cover of the Ramones classic "Commando" — and with all of the A7X guys singing backup vocals.

"You guys know the Ramones?" James Hetfield asked the crowd, only to be met with screams of approval. "Well they aren't here," he chuckled. "But we're playing one!" The band then launched into the standout from 1977's Leaving Home while the Avenged Sevenfold guys — who were then touring off of 2005's City of Evil — did gang-vocal duty on Kirk Hammet and Rob Trujillo's microphones.

It rips pretty freakin' hard. Watch it go down above via YouTube.
