One thrash institution toasts another

Every Metallica fan knows they've covered songs by Diamond Head, Misfits, Bob Seger and Discharge, but did you know they once put their spin on Slayer's "Raining Blood?" At a rehearsal space in May of 2009, the band — James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich and Rob Trujillo — suddenly busted into Slayer's iconic 1986 anthem of hell, and lucky for us, someone was in the practice room with their camera rolling.

In the video, the band are kicking around warming up, when suddenly Hetfield rips into the lead lick from "Raining Blood" and Ulrich immediately kicks into action, smacking his snare at the exact right moment while the other two bandmates join the fold.

The instrumental rendition carries on for about a minute before it disintegrates and the band move on to practicing their own song, "St. Anger," but still. Metallica covered Slayer, and you can watch them do it above via YouTube.
